Tony Romo Arrested on Suspicion of Operating Vehicle Under the Influence, Failed Field Sobriety Tests

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence in Wisconsin.

Romo, 46, was pulled over around 8 p.m. in Milwaukee on Thursday, July 23, according to an arrest report obtained by Us.

The CBS Sports analyst allegedly failed field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. He was booked and released, with a court date scheduled for September 21 — one day after the NFL’s Week 2 Sunday slate.

Since retiring from the NFL in 2006 after 13 years with the Cowboys, Romo has worked alongside announcer Jim Nantz as CBS’ lead NFL broadcasting crew.

Romo, who grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, was back in the Badger State to play in the 2026 Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament, which has become a yearly tradition for him.

“It is as tough as you are going to play I think in almost any golf tournament,” Romo told NBC26 Wisconsin in an interview on Thursday, hours before his arrest. “You get the best guys around, the competition, and then the people who work with the WSGA — they’re just really special people.”

He added, “This is a true test this week, each area of your game. It is going to show your weaknesses because you do have to use everything.”

Romo is an avid golfer, playing every year in Lake Tahoe’s American Century Championship celebrity tournament, where he’s a three-time winner.

When it comes to football and golf, Romo told NBC26 that he’s “competitive in both.”

“I am just better at football,” he said with a laugh. “But I think we are gaining strides.”

Romo has been married to his wife, Candice Crawford, since May 2011 and the couple share three sons: Hawkins, 14, Rivers, 12, and Jones, 8.

His arrest comes just weeks after he attended the wedding of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

In an exclusive interview with Us last year, Romo defended Kelce from critics of the high-profile relationship and its apparent omnipresence in pop culture.

“People won’t even realize this, but [Kelce’s] probably doing less than he used to when he was younger,” he said. “If you get your picture taken going to dinner with your superstar girlfriend, it looks like you’re going out or something. No, he just went to dinner. Almost as if he’s married, going to dinner with his wife or something. He didn’t get photographed when he was going out with his buddies all the time.”
