Makeup-Free Alicia Keys: ‘It Took Me Forever to Get This Skin’

Loving the skin she’s in. Alicia Keys stuck to her no-cosmetics vow by gracing Elle UK’s December 2016 issue without a trace of makeup on her face.

The “Hallelujah” singer, 35, wore her curly hair loose in the black-and-white shot that commemorates the magazine’s Feminism issue. Inside, she also models a teal head wrap, a black-and-white-striped blouse and silver “A” initial earrings. In another photo, the Voice coach shows even more skin in a black off-the-shoulder top with a red and black printed scarf to accessorize her mane.

'It took me forever to get this skin,” she said in the issue, according to the Daily Mail. “I mean, I know how it feels to have a face full of bumps and pimples. I lived through that in the public eye.”

Keys, who was a Proactiv spokesmodel, maintained that going without makeup isn’t too much of a sacrifice. “Some have called this a crusade,” she continued, affirming the fact that she is a feminist. “Well, I died laughing at that. I used to feel the pressure to appear as the music industry expected, but I don't now.”

In fact, the singer, who shares two children with music producer Swizz Beatz, has learned a few tricks of the trade to keep her complexion clear. “Alicia gets regular facials, does acupuncture and she eats healthy and exercises,” her makeup artist Dotti told W Magazine. She also uses ice to “bring her skin to life,” cucumbers to soothe her eyes, and pure jojoba oil to moisturize.

And when she’s on television, Keys wears very minimal makeup: Vita Liberata Self-Tanning Anti Age Serum (for her cheeks), Mally Evercolor Poreless Face Defender (to reduce shine) and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer (to fill her arches and enhance her freckles).
