We thought we knew our favorite blonde Aussie raptress in her entirety, but it turns out that we needed the cameras, lights, and raw emotion of the 2014 American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 23, to really get a grasp of Iggy Azalea, the person.
Looking domineering in a chic black tuxedo look, with a fluffy ponytail hairstyle, and glossy eye makeup — it wasn’t until she opened her mouth that we cut through the Australian accent to realize the “Fancy” rapper, 24, is a dead-on Jennifer Lawrence/Gwyneth Paltrow hybrid.
Seriously, when she got up to accept her award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop album — and graciously acknowledged the talent of her competitors, Drake and Eminem — she got all J. Law on us in her humble, aw shucks, ‘Really, me?’ spirit. Plus, her slanted eyes and chiseled cheekbones recalled Katniss Everdeen herself.
“This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life,” Azalea said crouching down to the podium. “It means so much to me that it’s for Best Hip Hop because that is what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams.”
In continuing with that mission, the star also released a sneak peek of five new songs from “Reclassifed” exclusively on Facebook — including her new song “Beg For It,” which she performed during the telecast.
Going back to that chic tuxedo — no star in Hollywood masters the androgynous menswear look quite like Gwyneth Paltrow. Azalea nailed it in all black — a sexy-yet-understated move right out of Paltrow’s playbook.
