Aside from the shoplifting, raving, and Top Gun-ing in The Mindy Project‘s Nov. 11 episode “We Need to Talk About Annette,” Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) once again slayed mixed prints and adorable fashions at the office and at home with her adorable boyfriend, Danny Castellano (Chris Messina).
Speaking of romantic evenings with Danny, a fan favorite look of the episode was Mindy’s rubber ducky sweater and navy slip. “Mindy wears a lot of pj’s, so we tried to mix it up a bit this season,” Perez tells Us Weekly. “I loved this Markus Lupfer sweater, worn casually over a sexy Josie Natori slip. While most women like to look effortless, we want to look effortfull!”
The palm-printed Karen Millen dress (with lilac nails!) easily transitioned from the office to a house call in Staten Island, where Mindy had to confront Danny’s mom. For that, ahem, awkward moment, she added a Lafayette 148 jacket (along with her L.K. Bennett shoes and Celine bag). “My first instinct was to go with a green jacket, but we wanted her to be in bright color when she went to ask Annette about the bracelet,” Perez says. “It’s hard to be subtle when you are wearing a bright yellow leather jacket.”
Like real life, sometimes outfits on television start with an accessory. “We had a bag from Tory Burch and it had been in Mindy’s office for a while. When I brought this Tory Burch blouse to a fitting, we remembered the purse and then ended up styling the outfit around the purse and blouse,” Perez says of pairing the items with a Karen Millen skirt, Rachel Roy blazer, Aqua earrings, and Stuart Weitzman heels. “I love over-coordination!”
“Although we normally keep Mindy in classic silhouettes, she can be quite the fashionista. I think this outfit is the quintessential New York fashion girl,” Perez says of the Equipment blouse, Vince jacket, and Prada skirt (sadly, not seen in the episode) worn with Rochas boots, Swarovski earrings, and Chanel bag.
But we’d be remiss to skip one of the most notable looks of the entire episode — that luscious bomber jacket that Danny wears throughout the episode. Fans of the style, or just Top Gun in general, should be pleased to know that the Andrew Marc “Norton” jacket is currently on sale for $359.10 at Andrewmarc.com (marked down from $798).
