After a three-week-long hiatus, The Mindy Project — and all of its mouth-watering style — is finally back. Naturally, costume designer Salvador Perez did not disappoint with a flurry of mixed prints, must-have coats, and, trendy ladylike dresses for the beloved Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling).
In the episode “Caramel Princess Time,” Mindy and Danny venture out of the office — and his apartment — for some much-needed one-on-one time. “Since they’ve become a couple, we don’t get a chance to see them on dates much, so I loved getting to show Mindy in a date look,” Perez tells Us Weekly of the custom coat he created. “I was inspired by the aqua houndstooth fabric and then the outfit came together after it.” He paired his Perez original with a Missoni dress, L.K. Bennett “Floret” pumps, and BaubleBar earrings.
Back in the office, Mindy chooses traditional work garb with an Equipment blouse, Antonio Melani skirt, BCBG earrings, and trench and shoes by L.K. Bennett.
“The Equipment blouse with Antonio Melani skirt is a classic Mindy mixed-print combo pulled together with the bright yellow shoes,” Perez tells Us. But, what yellow shoes, you ask? The L.K. Bennett “Floret” pumps ended up on the cutting room floor. “It kills me that we put so much detail into her looks, and then she is shot from the waist up,” he says.
For the street scene, Mindy worn a blue Kate Spade dress with a Bebe leather jacket, Stuart Weitzman shoes, BaubleBar earrings, and Prada bag. “We knew the scene started with a New York taxi so we went with a blue dress to contrast the cab,” Perez says.
What to wear for a weekend day spent with your boyfriend’s mom? “We went casual and chic,” Perez explains of the Felicity and Coco dress, Guess red trench, Sam Edelman boots, Chanel bag, and Amrita Singh earrings. “Knowing that her hair was going to end up, I wanted something that would show it off,” he says of the dangling baubles.
