This is for the Pretty Little Liars fans who are hooked on the wild story lines — and the styles on screen! Every week, costume designer Cameron Dale exclusively gives Us Weekly the scoop behind her favorite look from each episode of season 6. Scroll down to see this week's ensemble, and make sure to check back next week for Dale's next pick!
Yes, PLL boasts plenty of over-the-top ensembles — who can forget Hanna's (Ashley Benson) daytime kimono and shorts combo from a few episodes back? But in the March 8 episode, "Did You Miss Me," Dale's choice outfit is all about that relaxed chic.
"Since Emily has been a little lost and bumming around in California the last few years, her wardrobe hasn't had a huge evolution like the other girls," Dale tells Us Weekly. Case in point: "I've incorporated some beachy pieces to reflect her years in California, but Emily still loves her Chucks, flannels and denim."
To reflect the blended styles, Dale planned to top off Emily's embellished skirt by Elizabeth and James with a plaid Topshop button-up. But then her star interjected. "Shay [Mitchell] was feeling a white T-shirt with this look," Dale explains. "I was afraid the look would be too boring with just the white J. Crew tee, but we threw the flannel around her waist and it became supercute."
Dale went on to explain that there's a long road from a fitting to the screen. "I always like to hear what the girls have to say. What could have worked earlier that week in a fitting may not feel right to them on the day," she says. "We [the costume team] get our cardio in for the day running to the wardrobe truck and grabbing every cute T-shirt we can find, and then running back to set. We have to work off that craft table somehow!"
