Gisele Bundchen Is Interrupting Her Runway Retirement for This Special Reason

Gisele Bundchen
Gisele Bundchen, who announced her retirement from the runway last year, will return to the catwalk for the Summer Olympics 2016.

How could she resist?! Despite the fact that Gisele Bündchen announced her retirement from the runway last year, she’s hitting the catwalk again for one very special occasion: the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The supermodel, 35, will jump-start the festivities by strutting her stuff through the gateway at Maracanã Stadium for the opening ceremony, Women’s Wear Daily reports.

The pairing is a natural fit for the Brazilian native. Bündchen, who shares two children with husband Tom Brady, was discovered in São Paulo, Brazil, while on a school trip. Almost 20 years later, she made her retirement official in the same city, choosing the Colcci presentation during São Paulo Fashion Week to be her final catwalk gig.

At the time, Bündchen, who serves as a Givenchy brand ambassador, wrote to her fans via Instagram: “I am grateful that at 14, I was given the opportunity to start this journey. Today after 20 years in the industry, it is a privilege to be doing my last fashion show by choice and yet still be working in other facets of the business. #firstrunway #14yearsold 🙏🙏🙏 Sou muito grata por ter tido a oportunidade, aos 14 anos, de iniciar esta jornada. Hoje, após 20 anos nesta carreira, é um privilégio estar fazendo meu último desfile por escolha própria e ainda continuar trabalhando em outras facetas da indústria. #primeirodesfile #14anos”

While the former Victoria’s Secret Angel has not hit a runway since retiring last April, she’s hardly stayed away from the fashion scene. Bündchen continues to serve as a brand ambassador for Chanel fashion and beauty. She has also posed for major labels over the past year, including Carolina Herrera, Emilio Pucci, Balenciaga and Under Armour. And, of course, she released a $700 coffee table book dedicated to her career.
