So many models, so little room! After much anticipation, Vogue has at last unveiled the cover for its annual Fall Fashion bible, the iconic September Issue, on Monday, Aug. 17. In recent years, September Issue covers have almost exclusively featured celebs like Jennifer Lawrence (2013), Lady Gaga (2012), Halle Berry (2010), and Charlize Theron (2009) — but this year’s cover puts models front and center.
As revealed on the magazine’s website, as well as on its Twitter and Instagram accounts, the 2014 September Issue cover is a photo of runway divas Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, and Karlie Kloss. An accompanying headline dubs them the “Instagirls,” and teases out “856 Pages of Spectacular Fall Fashion,” with the “Models of the Moment in the Clothes of the Season.”
A pullout version of the cover, shot by famed photographer Mario Testino, unfolds to show six other so-called “Instagirls” — Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente, and Andreea Diaconu. Vogue describes them as “savvy on social media,” and says they’re “building their own brands and single-handedly catapulting themselves to this generation’s version of supermodel status.”
In a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot, the cover stars let Vogue in on some of their modeling secrets, and explain what it means to them to be a model today. “Super women, you know?” wild Brit Delevingne, 22, says. “Powerful, strong.”
Many of the Instagirls cite Christy Turlington as the ultimate supermodel, explaining that models today are “just models,” sans the “super.” As for the label “Instagirls”? “I like it,” Taylor Swift‘s BFF Kloss, 22, proclaims in the video. “It’s the new generation of kids, of us.”
