Zendaya is a pro at method dressing, and fans believe her all-black outfits worn during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour have a hidden meaning.
The actress, 29, sparked rumors that her character Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson dies in the upcoming movie with her dark ensembles and cryptic interviews.
On Monday, July 27, she stunned in an Ashi Studio dress while attending the movie’s premiere in Hollywood. The jet black look featured a plunging neckline, straps that protruded above her shoulders and a billowing skirt that cascaded into a train. Zendaya styled the number with sheer stockings and lace heels, as well as diamond earrings and gothic glam.
Zendaya’s makeup was equipped with smokey black eyeshadow, long lashes, bronzed cheeks and nude lips. Her hair was pulled down with her bangs swirled over her forehead.
Her daring look continued her streak of black dresses, which fans think may represent her mourning the death of her character.
At the premiere, Zendaya gave a hint about her press tour looks while chatting with AP News. “How much of the press tour for this movie was, ‘Let’s tell MJ’s story through the costuming?’” a reporter asked her on the red carpet.
Zendaya replied, “I think you just have to go to the movie and see for yourself.” She added, “Of course we love to play the very vivid storytelling. We just like to have fun and extend that storytelling through the press tour.”
On July 22, both Zendaya and Tom Holland confirmed that fans will cry “big time” while watching the movie.
“I cried multiple times,” Zendaya told Onic Entertainment. Holland agreed, “It’s very sad. It’s cathartic. But also devastating.”
Earlier on the press tour, Zendaya told another reporter to “bring some tissues” to the theater.
Fans were quick to share their reactions via social media, writing, “She is gonna die, isn’t she?”
Another fan compared Zendaya’s black press tour looks to Millie Bobby Brown’s dark ensembles worn during the Stranger Things season 5 events, which the actress later confirmed she wore to “mourn” her character, Eleven.
“I PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE,” the person wrote.
Elsewhere during the press tour, Zendaya stunned in a black lace-embellished Ashi Studios look, a charcoal Christian Cowan fringe dress, an inky suit and more.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on Friday, July 31.
