The Captain Marvel and Crazy Rich Asians actress is our newest style obsession. Her sartorial choices range from ultra-glam to sleek and sophisticated. But she’s not afraid to go bold: At the Captain Marvel premiere in L.A. she wore a Ralph & Russo Couture jumpsuit that had a pleated chiffon one-shoulder top and trousers embellished with iridescent laminated fringing. Chan called the look “cosmic.”
Chan also gravitates toward feminine frocks, like the floral satin organza Jason Wu Collection style she wore to the Critics’ Choice Awards. It was a “dream of a dress,” Chan said of the strapless design. “Gemma looked absolutely breathtaking in this custom gown; I love how decadent the dress is, it references a couture silhouette with a modern print,” designer Jason Wu tells Us. “I love Gemma’s poise, refinement and impeccable beauty. She wears clothes so beautifully, it’s been fun to see her incredible style evolution,” Wu adds.
At the BAFTA Los Angeles Tea Party, Chan chose an edgy Prabal Gurung number mixing together different color plaids. “Gemma so beautifully brings our clothes to life. For me, it’s never just about the dress, it’s about the woman in the dress. And Gemma is such an incredible, inspiring, empowering friend and muse,” designer Prabal Gurung tells Us. He continues: “I so deeply appreciate and admire the way she uses her platform to bring visibility to Asian designers. She is poised, eloquent and such a graceful spokesperson for our community. She is someone I am proud to stand with as she is a red carpet trailblazer and a symbol of hope.”
Another standout look was the pleated metallic silver Lurex custom-designed MarkGong creation, which she wore to the China Fashion Gala at The Plaza Hotel. “A wonderful night celebrating Chinese fashion and supporting emerging talent,” Chan said. The gown, which took about 120 hours to craft, features dramatic ruffles and pockets, a design element that was added because Chan loves garments with pockets. “The whole process was quite collaborative, especially once we started fittings, it was very clear Gemma is involved in creating her style and what she wants to show people,” Gong tells Us.
