2018 thus far has been a year of sartorial twist and turns — and major comebacks. First, the boxy, shoulder-pad-enhanced look made a comeback, then the high-cut leg swimsuit, and now, straight out of the ‘80s another major trend is picking up heat again: bike shorts (or biker shorts, depending on who you ask). Kendall Jenner first put the retro look on our fashion radar back in July 2017, and then this past weekend both Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid modeled both the athleisure and Girl’s Night Out way to rock the form-fitting and cardio-approved look
When Kendall first wore the Spandex style last July, she effectively demonstrated how to take the athletic basic and update it to read pulled together for a chic luncheon. The key here was not only that her Spandex crops were on the longer end (think pedal pusher), but she expertly paired the staple with a colorful tunic-length sweater that she wore off-the-shoulder and belted at the waist and added a simple black stiletto sandals, tiny-frame sunglasses and a thick black headband to elevate the look.
On the flipside, EmRata modeled the classic way to wear bike shorts in a matchy-matchy athleisure look with her husband in NYC on Friday, May 11, by rocking a black pair with a thick branded waistband from Kith. Then she added a cropped sweatshirt to show off those washboard abs, a classic pair of white sneakers and Le Specs x Adam Selman cateye glasses for a touch of glamour.
Last but not least, we have Bella giving the daytime bike short a run for its money in a metallic pair worn specifically for the purpose of partying the night away in Cannes. Now, Bella’s shorts were metallic, but that wasn’t the only element of bling to her look. She also wore oodles of jewels on top of a classic crop top. And to make things just a touch fancier, she added square-toe heeled sandals.
