Apparently, Eva Mendes and Shailene Woodley have some things in common!

For her first sit-down since giving birth on Sept. 12, the new mom dished out plenty of her secrets to Violet Grey—including why she and her boyfriend, Ryan Gosling, chose the name Esmeralda Amada for their baby girl. But over here in the Beauty Department, one revelation stood out above the rest: that she makes her own skincare products.

“When it comes to skincare I love using things I can find in my kitchen cabinet!” Mendes, 40, who worked a retro bob and jewel-toned makeup for the shoot, revealed. “I use coconut oil as a moisturizer, and I combine yogurt and sea salt to exfoliate.”

The Place Beyond the Pines actress also shared a tip for all the newly minted mamas like herself. “If I’m going out and looking tired and puffy (which happens a lot these days), I dip my face into a bucket of ice water,” she said. “I once worked with a makeup artist who worked briefly with Lucille Ball. She told me that’s what the actresses did back then.”

Not that she has all her new-parent tricks down pat yet! When Violet Grey founder Cassandra Huysentruyt Grey asked Mendes—who admitted that nights with her daughter have been “some of the wildest nights I’ve ever had”—if the actress has any homemade remedies for stretch marks, Mendes quipped, “Lady, send me the [luxe beauty cream] La Mer!”

Most touchingly, though, Mendes shared just why she and Gosling chose the name they did for their child. “We both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame and just think it’s a beautiful name,” the 2 Fast 2 Furious alum said. “Her middle is Amada, which was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”
