Katie Holmes "Horrified" by Suri Penis Gummies Incident

It's not always easy being Suri's mommy.
Katie Holmes knows that she's under a microscope as an actress, wife to Tom Cruise -- and mother to Suri, who turns 5 this month.
Already famous for her jet-set lifestyle, couture kiddie clothes and her attachment to a pacifier, Suri unwittingly caused yet another stir a few weeks ago when she was photographed -- in the arms of her famous mom -- clutching a box of X-rated, phallic candy.
Holmes, 32, opened up good-naturedly about the photo fracas during a Thursday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"Recently, I took [Suri] to get ice cream in New York at this place called Serendipity that we go to all the time. It's for kids. The clientele is children," explains the actress, who plays Jackie Kennedy in the new ReelzChannel miniseries The Kennedys. "We go in and we are waiting for a table and she grabs some gummies that are boy part gummies. I was horrified."

(In pics that stormed the web, Suri checked out a colorful box of "Penis Gummies," featuring drawings of anatomically correct chewy candies.)
Continued Holmes sheepishly: "P-e-n-i-s gummies. I said, oh wow those aren't Swedish fish. . . They are called p-e-n-i-s gummies and they look like it."

Holmes spotted the controversy immediately. "She was holding the box and I was like 'OK, wow we don't need that right now.' Because I thought if I said 'Put that back,' and then she's going to say, 'What is this?' And I really didn't want to have that conversation."
The Dawson's Creek alum was upset that Serendipity was even selling such a raunchy treat. "I was like, why are selling these here? This is for kids. And then it was on the cover of a magazine that I'm giving her those gummies!"
"I was like, 'Oh my god, no.' We put them back."

Tell Us What You Think
31hey, kim, let everyone know when you decide to pull the huge hair out of your ass.
That's dumb. It's just a body part. She ought to be ten times more horrified that she's raising that little girl to be a Xenu worshipper. That's going to do tons more damage than some harmless gummies every would. Oh, and by the way, that's nothing compared to what Suri's going to think when she gets older and watches the Director's Cut of Eyes Wide Shut.
It's a PENIS people!! So what??? It's not like she's scarred for life! All she should of said is no candy right now- we're getting ice cream- and then put them back. Big damn deal!!
I totally agree with both Rebecca Christiansen and Kim Greene. You ladies said it all. Kudos for knowing what it takes to raise respectable children and being a parent and not their friend. :-)
This photo would have been perfect if they caught Katie yawning or something.
Wow, I read the comments - you guys are all just swooning over celebrities. 1. Serendipity is an ice cream store in NYC - its not a Farrells, its not a 31 Flavors. Its not exactly the place a 4-year old walks around picking things up unsupervised. But dare me to find fault with a celebrity. But how is a store supposed to be able to cater to a broad clientele base when a woman lets her kid walk around unsupervised especially at midnight? The woman you all are bagging on sounds like she is a real parent. Rules are essential for kids to grow up and they only benefit from boundaries. I grew up with a bunch of kids who had moms like you people sound, and they were more invested in being my friend than being my friend's mom - insisting I call them by their first name and all. But I was the only one with curfew and I was the only one who didn't get arrested for shoplifting in my group of friends. I also was the only one who didn't secretly smoke. I also call my mom once or twice a week. She had rules, she had boundaries and I learned respect from an early age. Its not an entitlement ladies, its something you earn. Kids are not little toys that everyone is expected to enjoy as much as you do. If a kid doesn't know how to act in a restaurant, why should I put up with their screaming or walking around? Not everyone thinks your four year old with the pacifier will grow out of it - some of them actually think your kid looks ridiculous. But you know, parenting is done by the hired help more anyway. I just don't think you all should put people down who aren't so impressed by celebrities that they actually have rules and expect their kids to behave. That sounds really stupid and short-sighted on your part.
she should have took some home to Tom
I am disgusted with the fact that a kid friendly store would have such things as this. If I were Katie and Tom I would boycott Serendipity and encourage my friends and fans to do the same.
I think Katie is a great mom. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with a child picking up penis candy. Had it been my child, she would have been allowed to eat it. And it would have been a good starting point to learn about the other "sexes" anatomy...
Kim greene, i dont even think you're a parent.. and if you do.. it would be a nightmare to have a mom like you. what alexander said was right, its normal thing that could happen to anybody...kids are like that.. i think this incindent was funny, i would probably laughing and freak out at the same time if my kids pick those kinda candy..
Wow Kim, must be nice to be such a perfect parent. Your poor kids. I bet they have constipation problems. Alexander, you hit the nail on the head. Junk food companies spend A LOT of money figuring out how to entice people to buy their products. Kids are attracted to bright colors and they are going to touch things, no matter how anal retentive their mothers are. Personally, I would have fallen on the floor laughing if one of my kids picked those up. Then I would have had them put the candy back and explain that that particular candy was yucky. No brainer there.
Well behaved kids don't touch stuff in a candy store. WOW!! Clearly Kim Greene doesn't have kids. It's only natural for kids to touch and pick up stuff. Someone needs a reality check. If Kim does have kids then I pity them.
KIM GREENE STOP JUST STOP!!!! CHRIST!
well its not worse than kids being in those Spencers stores, with the boob cups and penis hats...you can be any age to go into one of those.
Alexander - sorry but you are wrong. Any child who knows how to behave doesn't touch everything in a candy store. They ask their parent's permission. Sorry but that's the way it is in the real world. If Katie really thinks this is funny, its sad. She had the kid out at midnight - I was in a restaurant at 10:30 one night in NYC and they were there and the kid runs around untethered with Tom "following" her. Clearly he thinks she's adorable but with the prices the restaurant was charging, running kids at 10:30 at night is not appropriate. I think Suri runs the show and experience tells me that it will bite them both on the butt at some point in the near future. To say its okay that a 4-year old touch candy without permission is just wrong. How do little kids operate without boundaries?? Like this - they wear what they want, when they want - they take what they want when they want. You parents who want to be your kids' friends instead of their mom and/or dad take heed, this cr*p is just that. The kid doesn't know enough to run the show Scientology or not.
That child needs some structure. She needs to play with other kids instead of being an accessory on her mother's arm 24/7. Katie had Suri out at MIDNIGHT when this latest inappropriate incident happened. We've all seen the pictures of how Katie is trying not to burst out laughing that Suri is playing with a box of penis gummies. But I guess it doesn't matter what these two do. Suri's life will be in the cult of Scientology so her life will be strange and secretive. The best thing the media and the paps could do for this child is to stop following Katie around and stop taking pictures of Suri. That way the child might have a little bit of chance at being a child.
seeing as im not a mother and shouldnt even be talking here, i found this topic interesting. Suri had no idea what the candy was, it was colorful and bright. ofcourse shes going to pick it up and ask if she can have it, thats just plainly logical. any child of any parent would have done the same thing in nearly every culture in the entire world. i think a majority of you mothers who have commented here need to think this thoroughly about the many times you have changed how you act simply because you are in the presence of someone of authority or with the ability to show the world what you do and say. I would appreciate it if you took into consideration these sort of things, not to mention the amount of times you would rather your child be unknown of something than know what it is. such as "mommy and daddy wrestling". thats all i have to say really.
I think Katie is a good Mom. I would be horrified too if my child picked those up with paparazzi around..!
and just a note to Lilly - it could not have happened to any mother..when my kids were small, they were never NEVER allowed to pick things up without asking first. Sorry, its just how it is/was in a house with rules.
Did you love how she actually had to deliberate whether to tell her kid no?? Wow. That says alot. I'm sorry I'd go to Serendipity whenever I had a fight with my husband -- I thought it was geared to me..thanks for that insight as well Ms. Cruise you are so ahead of us all..
