Kerry Washington Talks Breastfeeding, Body Pressure After Birth: Watch

From her professional endeavors to her private life, Kerry Washington has it all handled. The Scandal star, 37, opened up about her priorities, family, and self-image in an interview with BET’s 106 & Park on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

During the sit-down with hosts Bow Wow and Keshia Chanté, the famously cagey actress offered up a small peek into her life with her husband Nnamdi Asomugha and their daughter Isabelle, 6 months.

“I feel like for me, what I do for a living is I become other people,” Washington explained. “It’s important to me to keep my private life private. Then, you can really believe that I’m these other people. You’re not worried about my life, you’re worried about Olivia Pope’s life, and Olivia Pope’s life is much more interesting than Kerry Washington’s life.”

Washington welcomed her first child this past April after secretly exchanging vows with NFL player Asomugha in June 2013. She chose not to offer photos or information about the little one or her wedding.

“For me in my work, I give 150 percent, I do not hold back at all, but I feel like something has to be mine,” the Emmy-nominated star said. “With my family, we feel like we gotta keep each other for each other, and the work belongs to everybody.”

“It’s really important to be yourself, to be comfortable in your skin… I think it’s unfair to feel like you have to wake up and be perfect,” she said. “You wake up and be the best version of yourself you can be.”

Already slimmed down just months after her daughter’s birth, Washington explained the healthy way that she got the weight off.

“I’ve always been a person who really approaches health in a proactive way,” she said. “I work out, I eat right, so those are things I continued to do once my doctor said I could, but not to be crazy about it. I’m breastfeeding, so I can’t starve myself. It’s important for me to be a good mom and a good actor, and be responsible to myself and my family.”
