Report: Natalie Portman Names Her Son Alef

Natalie Portman has kept a low-profile since giving birth to a baby boy in early June. Though she and fiance Benjamin Millepied have yet to officially announce their son's name, reports from Israel claim the Oscar winner has named her firstborn Alef, after the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet. The name also represents the "oneness of God" and the element of air.

As first reported by the Israel Hayom newsletter, the name was revealed on the Israeli TV show Good Evening With Guy Pines.

Though Portman, 30, has yet to confirm the report, Alef would certainly be a fitting choice for the Black Swan star: born in Jerusalem (with the given name Natalie Hershlag), the actress has dual American-Israeli citizenship.

Maybe alef sounds weird here in america, but maybe in israel its a common, or traditional name...we have to respect other cultures even if were not familiar with them.
please grow up thee's been worse names than that in hollywood Jemma Redgrave's real name is Jemima or film producer Mike Todd's real name was Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen
Well, I personally think the kid will suffer in later years. All the time he will be teased, "where's bet?" Sheesh, I own Alef Bet Jewelry and people think they are hysterical saying that to me!
@Shannon It's not really a matter of acting 12, it's really meant to point out how stupid it is to sit there and judge anyone for the name they give their kid, especially when the people doing it have no room to talk. So what... you have a name that 20 million other people have, yet somehow they feel better about themselves and make fun of someone for choosing a different name. Their excuse is that the child will be picked on in the future. Maybe if they didn't raise their kids to pick on other people for being different, there wouldn't be such a problem with it. And by the way... I was born in August. I was named after someone who passed away. I wouldn't mind though if my name was August either.
dislike the name but at least its not orange or banana...or swan...
Geez, girls, are you 12? Shaila didn't name herself and neither did April or Macey, unless they did so as adults. When we are mothers, we have a very difficult task of naming our kids and my hubby and I butt heads often. I personally think the very best names are classy with a bit of history to them, yet also a bit unique so there aren't 47 other kids with the same name. I like that Natalie chose a name that is hebrew, but I really hope his middle name reflects Benjamin's nationality or a family name or something he chose as I don't believe he is Jewish. Maybe he plans to become a Jew, or maybe he really liked Aleph.
@Macey Actually, Shaila had the nerve to talk and I was making a point. April is a beautiful name. I'd rather name my kid Bear than name my kid Macey, that's for sure.
It hebrew, maybe the name means something to her coming from an isreali background. Its better than some names these celebs come up with. I thinks its kinda cute.
I think she actually spelled it Aleph but it can be spelled Alef.
@ April, you really have the nerve to talk - ''month''!!
Yeah, because Shaila is such a great name.....
I like that name and it's normal, compared to Alicia Silverstone's pet, I mean, baby, Bear Blue. *sigh*
