Well, there goes her social life. After responding to Stacey Dash on its website, BET continued to troll the polarizing actress/commentator on Wednesday, January 20, for arguing that the BET Awards and Black History Month should be eliminated in light of the ongoing Oscars 2016 boycott.
Dash, 49, addressed the outrage over the lack of minority nominees during a Fox & Friends segment early Wednesday, and questioned networks like BET for giving awards largely to black artists and actors. “I think it’s ludicrous,” she said in her segment. “If we don’t want segregation, then we have to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the [NAACP] Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black.” The actress also claimed that the U.S. should do away with Black History Month.
BET then published a gallery on its website titled, “Every Time Stacey Dash Proved She Was Clueless,” and didn’t stop there. On Instagram, the Viacom-owned channel re-grammed a meme of the star from her beloved ’90s cult classic, Clueless. The post, which was first shared by BET’s President of Programming, Stephen Hill, featured Dash’s character, Dionne, gaping at the camera.
“Aww dang,” Hill captioned the pic. “I loved you in ‘Clueless.’ I had no idea that you actually were.”
The network had even more zingers up its sleeve. BET followed up with a still of Dash on the networks’ comedy series, The Game, on which she starred from 2009 to 2011. “Soooooo @realstaceyldash, can we get our check back… or nah?” the Instagram caption read. “#Remember #YouWereOnTheGame #AndWeDontMeanTheRapper.”
Many people railed against Dash on social media late Wednesday, saying the Fox News correspondent was missing the point.
On Thursday, January 21, Hill spoke to the New York Daily News about the ongoing Oscars brouhaha and why it was significant. “It would be great if the Oscar nominees represented even closely the percentage of moviegoers who are of different ethnicities, but they don’t,” the BET exec noted. “The Oscar is the top movie award in the industry. If you’re in an industry and that’s the top prize, you just want to feel like you can be included in that.”
