“Originally, when I started the song, I was just, I was only trying to impress her,” Shelton revealed to Extra in an interview. “You know, just trying to write her a song to get her excited about me. And I sent her the song half-finished and she wrote the other half of the song. So, it’s such a 50/50 emotionally invested thing.”

The “Honey Bee” crooner also opened up about unveiling the work on live TV with his partner in crime. “It’s not like anything I think that she and I have ever done before,” the country artist explained. “This is such an honest song just about kind of how we got started … It’s already fun just talking about it — the fact that this is happening is exciting.”

Shelton and Stefani also performed their new duet on Monday, May 9, on the Honda Stage of the iHeart Radio Theatre in Burbank, California. “I figure since everyone else is cashing in on my life,” Shelton said of his upcoming album, If I’m Honest. “I might as well get some of that too.”

The show will air on Wednesday, May 18, a few days before Shelton’s new album hits stores on Friday, May 20.

As previously reported, the Voice coaches bonded over their respective divorces last summer, and found solace in each other. On Monday, Voice showrunner Mark Burnett shared his perspective about seeing the pair amid their painful splits, and got emotional while recalling their journeys.

“I was there in those dark moments,” Burnett told Entertainment Tonight. “[Later,] I said to Blake and Gwen, ‘Imagine in your darkest moments if someone showed you a videotape of right now. The love you have, wouldn’t it be great?’ And they’re both smiling. It would be great. They are so amazing, they’re amazing.”
