Daniel Radcliffe opened up about his struggles with alcohol — specifically, after the Harry Potter films ended — on the Wednesday, Nov. 18, episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

“I was living alone, and I think I was really freaked out,” the British actor, 26, revealed. “I drank a lot.”

He explained that his alcohol dependence resulted from what he described as a fear of returning to reality after playing J.K. Rowling’s popular boy wizard for more than a decade.

“I think it was more to do with going out in public and having a battle within me of thinking no, I can have a totally normal life. You get bored of waking up feeling like that,” he said.

Radcliffe had no shortage of movie roles after the Harry Potter films ended. He said he was grateful that still found numerous opportunities after the Harry Potter films ended.

“I was very lucky that people gave me opportunities directly after Potter finished to play more grown-up stuff, because I could have been getting teen offer type stuff,” the Woman in Black actor said.

The Kill Your Darlings star has previously opened up about his fight with alcoholism.

“I have a very addictive personality,” he told Heat magazine in 2012. “It was a problem. I don’t want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily — I mean, nightly.” He also revealed at the time that he was drunk during many scenes he filmed for the Harry Potter films — which ran from 2001 to 2011.

“I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work,” he explained. “I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes.”

Radcliffe — who is currently dating actress Erin Darke — has been sober since 2013.
