Despite what Donald Trump thinks, not everyone considers him “awesome.” The presidential hopeful took it upon himself to rally a crowd lining the blocks of Fifth Avenue in New York City on Thursday, Sept. 24. The only problem? They were waiting not for the Republican candidate, but rather to greet His Holiness Pope Francis.
Trump, 69, was photographed running out of Trump Tower and into the street with his thumbs up around 4:30 p.m. local time as several amused attendees snapped pictures on their phones and looked on.
According to Twitter reports, there were some cheers, but mostly boos from the largely Hispanic crowd waiting for the Argentinian-born Pope. Trump’s controversial comments about immigration, specifically Mexican immigrants, have dramatically alienated him from Hispanics.
After his quick appearance, Trump retreated inside, but later re-emerged with his son Donald Jr. on the balcony above the Gucci store, which is located inside Trump Tower. Once again he was greeted with boos.
The New York Daily News reports that those waiting for Pope Francis began chanting “Feo! Feo!,” the Spanish word for “ugly.”
Pope Francis started his day in Washington, D.C., meeting with members of Congress and President Barack Obama before flying to NYC to hold Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
“I’m Protestant, but I have great respect for the Pope,” Trump said in a recent interview on CNN. “He’s becoming very political, there’s no question about it. But I like the Pope.”
