Well, he certainly got an answer. Dr. Phil McGraw was slammed by some of his Twitter followers on Tuesday, Aug. 20 after conducting a hugely controversial flash poll via the social networking site. Buzzfeed reports that the 62-year-old pop psychologist and talk show host tweeted, "If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teensaccused."
McGraw immediately received angry replies of "No, it's never OK." One follower wrote, "DrPhil The answer is No, Never you jack--. And then you kick whoever asked you in the throat. #teensaccused."
Dr. Phil has since deleted the tweet, and a spokesman for his syndicated talk show released a statement to Buzzfeed addressing the incident. "This tweet was intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic. It was not intended to be taken lightly," the spokesperson said. "It's based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label."
Some Dr. Phil fans are now defending the star for his question. "I consider myself a feminist and think that @DrPhil's tweet was aimed as a poll to be discussed, not promoting rape culture," one woman tweeted.
Dr. Phil frequently posts controversial questions on Twitter to facilitate discussion and promote upcoming episodes of his show. On Wednesday he asked, "Have you ever experienced abuse by a stepparent? How was it resolved? Reply to @drphil with #stepparentabuse."
A change.org petition has been made demanding Dr. Phil to issue an apology, arguing, "There is no question, Dr Phil: rape is rape."
