‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Sara Ramirez Comes Out as Bisexual

Speaking her truth! Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez came out as bisexual while giving a speech at the 40 to None Summit in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 8.

The married star (she tied the knot with banker beau Ryan Debolt in July 2012) passionately praised the work of the True Colors Fund and got personal with her speech.

“So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections — whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” she began. “And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life — woman, multiracial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides — I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”

Ramirez, 41, previously played the role of Dr. Callie Thorne, who also identified as bisexual, on the medical drama. On the series, she initially played the love interest and eventual wife of bumbling intern George O’Malley (T.R. Knight). In later seasons, she had relationships with plastic surgeon Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith). She was also married to pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).

The actress left the hit ABC medical drama after 10 years this past May, a move that surprised show creator Shonda Rhimes.

“This one was different because it wasn’t a big planned thing,” Rhimes, 46, said at the Vulture Festival in NYC on May 22. “I had a different plan going and when Sara came in and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was lucky that we’d shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”

Prior to her departure, Ramirez hinted that she was moving on from Grey’s with a cryptic tweet in April.

“That’s a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorres #Season13 #GreysAnatomy #ThankYou all for an enriching & unforgettable #Rollercoaster ride,” she wrote at the time.
