Mugshots, apparently, are the new headshots. Jeremy Meeks, who was arrested on felony weapons charges in Stockton, Calif., Wednesday, June 18, has easily become the Stockton Police Department's most famous convicted felon.
The Northern California city's police squad posted mugshots of Meeks and four others in its latest gang-related bust on Wednesday. Meeks' picture was by far the most popular and has since garnered more than 50,000 likes and 5,500 shares on Facebook.
"I have not seen that many likes for a photo before," Stockton PD spokesman Officer Joseph Silva told the Associated Press on Thursday.
Meeks' chiseled face, pale blue eyes, and shaved head also sparked a wave of commentary, including more than 14,800 comments, mostly from admirers. "Holy [heck] i would arrest him too..hottest bad boy I've seen," one Facebook user wrote. Another woman added, "He can kidnap me anyday... Hold me against my will lol." Other admirers said the convicted felon belonged on reality TV series America's Next Top Model or an Abercrombie & Fitch ad campaign.
Users even photoshopped his mugshot in the style of Calvin Klein ad campaigns. One Twitter handle shared the photo with the hashtag, "#FreeJeremyMeeks."
Meeks, though, is not a model—he's described by Silva as "one of the most violent criminals in the Stockton area." Four men were taken into custody during a mission dubbed Operation Ceasefire, an alliance between the Stockton police gang unit, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Task Force, and other agencies. The partnership between the agencies was formed after a recent surge in robberies and shootings in the Weston Ranch area of Stockton.
Though Silva provided no further information to the AP about Meeks' specific crimes, he is currently being held on $900,000 bail. He will be arraigned Friday, June 20.
