Johnny Strange, a world-record holding adventurer, died on Thursday, Oct. 1, in a wingsuiting accident, TMZ reports. The daredevil was only 23.
Strange, who became famous at age 17 for being the youngest person to ever climb all seven of the world’s highest peaks, was wingsuiting in Switzerland when something went wrong during his jump, according to the site.
The young adventurer spoke with Kevin & Bean on KROQ on Monday, revealing he was shooting a dangerous proximity video where he would be flying “super close to stuff.”
Strange, who is from Malibu, Calif., conquered Antarctica’s Mt. Vinson Massif when he was just 12 years old. He also base jumped the Grand Canyon, surfed 30-foot waves in Hawaii, and skateboarded down the side of a mountain, among various other stunts.
Verne Troyer and Melissa Joan Hart both took to Twitter to mourn Strange. “So sad to hear the news today about Johnny Strange. RIP buddy,” Troyer shared, while Hart tweeted: “My whole family is grieving for this young man and his family! Rest in peace Johnny!”
