Katy Perry Calls Taylor Swift a “Sweetheart,” Kanye West a “Villain”

Katy Perry
Katy Perry told Elle in its March 2015 cover story that she was "scared s---less" ahead of her Super Bowl XLIX halftime show performance; plus, she mentioned Taylor Swift in the interview.

Don't try to reach her, she's offline! Hot off her Super Bowl XLIX performance, Katy Perry's March 2015 cover for Elle was released on Tuesday, Feb. 3. In the issue, the pop star talks about how terrified she was as she prepped for the biggest moment in her career, and discussed her fellow music superstars Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Beyonce.

"In my show, I am boss daddy. I am boss mommy," Perry, 30, told the mag. "They call me Boss. Everything goes through my eyes; I call all the shots, 100 percent of it. With the NFL, I have to be accountable to several levels of red tape. There are many committees I have to go through for my costumes, the budgets of my show, every interview—everything, I have to report to somebody. So I am no longer the boss; I have to relinquish that control."

Perry said that after committing to the halftime show, she trained arduously day in and day out to successfully deliver a worthy performance. "We love this opportunity, but once you decide you're gonna do the Super Bowl, you're gonna have no f—ing life for six months," she noted. "It is the biggest thing. Anyone that's ever done it has been scared s—less. You stay off the Internet for the five days afterward."

Perry, however, could not resist signing on to Twitter. She tweeted Monday: "MOST WATCHED SHOW IN US HISTORY?! Whelp, I gotta keep reminding myself I put my pants one leg at a time… But, yes I am incredibly proud!" She also shared an Instagram photo of her new "XLIX" tattoo, commemorating her wild Super Bowl performance, which included a giant lion, dancing sharks, and Missy Elliott's return.

With her halftime show on Feb. 1, The pop superstar joined the ranks of predecessors like Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and more; and according to the "California Gurls" songstress, there's nothing like being compared to Queen Bey.

"Oh my God. I'm such a big Beyoncé fan," Perry gushed to Elle. "Beyoncé just put out a video! You've got to see this video! I was like, Finallllly. Finally I see you. I don't see some propaganda version of you. I see you. I relate to who you are."

The "Roar" singer also praised soulful British singer Adele for being level-headed amidst the many accolades she's received throughout her 20s. "Adele is so real and couldn't care less about the trappings of fame," Perry noted. "She came to a show at the Hammersmith Apollo in England and stole my after-show burrito. She's like [heavy British accent], 'How the f— did you get a burrito in England?'"

Quite the pop icon herself, Perry mused to the mag that she never expected to be a phenomenon. "It is a hundred times harder a dream than the dream that I dreamt when I was 9," the singer reflected. "You think you signed up for one thing, but you automatically sign up for a hundred others. And that is why you see people shaving their f—ing heads."

As for the ongoing headlines surrounding pop stars and their relationships (good or bad)? Perry told Elle that if her counterparts were in a soap opera, the narrative would consistently be the same.

"You've got to name someone the villain, someone the princess, someone the mom-, the dad-type—you know, there always have to be characters," Perry shared. "As pop figures, we're all characters. And the media uses that. Who is the sweetheart, who is the villain? You know. Taylor's the sweetheart. Kanye's the villain. That's the narrative."

Perry's note about Swift is interesting, considering that the two are embroiled in a public spat. Just last week, Perry remarked to Billboard about the 1989 hitmaker: "If somebody is trying to defame my character, you're going to hear about it."

The March 2015 issue of Elle hits newsstands on Feb. 17.
