Kristen Bell spoke from the heart and got emotional while discussing her husband Dax Shepard’s addict past on the Sunday, July 24, episode of CBS’s Sunday Morning.

The 36-year-old actress, who wed Shepard, 41, in 2013 in a tiny Beverly Hills courthouse, admitted that it hasn’t always been easy for the Parenthood alum, but that she’s proud of the ways in which he works to stay sober.

“He’s a wonderful father,” she said during the interview. “He knows the value of things. He was an addict for many, many years, and he pulled himself out of it, and he’s been sober for 11, 12 years now. … And he knows how many times he’s messed up and how many times he’s been really close to losing everything.”

The pair share daughters Lincoln, 3, and Delta, 18 months. Bell added that one thing the two have in common is that they put family first.

“I always think, if I’m on my deathbed, what am I gonna be thinking about?” the Bad Moms actress said. “And it won’t be some random movie I participated in, or some TV show. It will be my family.”

Shepard has been open about his drug use in the past, and in a 2012 interview with Playboy, he admitted that at one point, his drug and alcohol use was so out of control that he was “lucky that I didn’t go to jail.”

“I just loved to get f--ked up — drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything,” he said at the time. “Mostly my love was Jack Daniel’s and cocaine. … Kristen’s a good girl. All the things I’d done were terrifying to her, and she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous and a father and all those things. For the first year and a half we were together, that was what we battled over almost weekly.”
