Following the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown on Sunday, July 26, Nick Gordon‘s mom, Michelle Gordon, spoke out on her son’s behalf on Monday, alleging that he has “suffered greatly” after his longtime love was hospitalized this past January, and he subsequently went to rehab.

“The passing of Bobbi Kristina is devastating to Nick and our family,” Michelle said in a statement to Us Weekly on July 27. “Nick loved and cared for Krissi deeply, and he has suffered greatly each and every day they’ve been apart. Nick and our family are in mourning, and we ask that you respect our privacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with both the Houstons and the Browns during this difficult time.”

Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston‘s only child was found facedown and unresponsive in a bathtub of her suburban Atlanta home on Jan. 31. Bobbi Kristina was discovered by her friend, Max Lomas, and police said Gordon was performing CPR on the aspiring singer when paramedics arrived at the scene.

The R&B scion was subsequently hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma for months. In late June, her co-guardians, dad Bobby Brown and aunt Pat Houston, confirmed that Bobbi Kristina was being transferred to a hospice.

She died at age 22 on Sunday evening. “Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July 26, 2015, surrounded by her family,” the Houstons told Us in a statement. “She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.”

Bobby also released a statement to Us on Monday via his lawyer. “Krissy was and is an angel,” the singer told Us in his statement. “I am completely numb at this time. My family must find a way to live with her in spirit and honor her memory. Our loss is unimaginable.”

The case surrounding Bobbi Kristina’s hospitalization remains an open investigation. Meanwhile shocking accusations have been brought against Gordon, who was sued for $10 million last month by Bobbi Kristina’s conservator, Bedelia Hargrove, on the 22-year-old’s behalf. The complaint accuses Gordon of assaulting his live-in girlfriend, alleging that he dragged her upstairs by the hair and knocked her teeth out hours before the bathtub incident. Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that Gordon withdrew funds from Bobbi Kristina’s account without her authorization.

“No human being, male or female, should endure what Bobbi Kristina endured,” Hargrove told Us Weekly in a statement at the time the suit was filed. “[Co-guardians] Pat Houston and Bobby Brown have done all they can to take care of Bobbi Kristina since this terrible tragedy occurred. I have worked closely with both of them and we all want the very best for Bobbi Kristina.”

The Roswell Police Department has confirmed to Us since February that the case was being treated as a criminal investigation. Lisa Holland of the Roswell PD told Us Weekly in another statement on Monday, July 27, that “everything remains the same.” Holland added, “It is still under investigation, we have no other statement to make other than what the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office released today.”
