A touching father-daughter moment or an awkward exchange?

After Ryan O'Neal had dinner with daughter Tatum O'Neal on Sunday at Malibu's Taverna Tony's restaurant, he bid her goodbye with a hug -- and an awkward kiss.

This wasn't their first uncomfortable exchange.

Nearly five months earlier, at the funeral of his longtime love Farrah Fawcett, Ryan, 68, admitted that he accidentally hit on Tatum, 46.

Look back at Farrah Fawcett's unforgettable life

He says he had been so estranged from her that he didn't even recognize her.

"I had just put the casket in the hearse and I was watching it drive away when a beautiful blonde woman comes up and embraces me," Ryan told Vanity Fair. "I said to her, 'You have a drink on you? You have a car?' She said, 'Daddy, it's me--Tatum!' I was just trying to be funny with a strange Swedish woman, and it's my daughter. It's so sick."

Tatum didn't find the incident disturbing.

"That's our relationship in a nutshell," said the actress, who won an Oscar at age 10 for starring with her father in Paper Moon. "You make of it what you will. It had been a few years since we'd seen each other, and he was always a ladies' man, a bon vivant."

Daughter or not, he should not be hitting on someone at his wife's funeral... even jokingly

Ryan O'neal is a freak. I personally find a father trying to hold your face to kiss you on the mouth is more than awkward. Because of his heavy alcohol and drug addictions, this man's mind is not right or his morals intacked. I wouldn't be suprised if we hear in a few years, Tatum reveal that her father molested her. The family is screwed up and desperately needs to sober up to start back on any right track.

    THAT IS SICKENING COMMENT US!!!!

Ryan O'Neal was far from the perfect father, but Tatum has always loved her father no matter what. She is probably just trying to re-establish her relationship with her him. There should be no reason to read any more into this. Plenty of mothers, fathers, and their children give pecks on the lips and I don't see anything wrong with that. Geez, give them a break!

what the hell is the matter with this country . . . i love my daughters immensely and see nothing wrong with a kiss on the lips. i'm not sticking my tongue down their throats!

I don't kiss my dad on the mouth. That is totally unnecessary and disgusting. This picture is awkward because clearly her dad has a problem with social boundaries. Why would he hit on any woman at a funeral? Even Ryan admits it was a sick situation.

So let me get this straight, stripper in training Miley Cyrus can have an incestual relationship with HER father (Vanity Fair pics, anyone) but the rest of us that have innocent kisses with our family members get bombarded. Find a real article to comment on....

i am getting SO sick of this horrid mag! granted, hitting on her at the funeral - eh, a little weird. but i kiss my mother on the lips every time i see her. does that mean we're lesbian lovers? no, it means she's my mother and i love her. US, you are beginning to suck supreme and should be sued.

Theres nothing wrong with this, alot of people kiss their loved ones on the lips. I kiss my own mom like that, and other relatives. That is ridiculous to call it awkward

    People. People. People.

  • November 17, 2009 - 1:36pm Jen

Nothing wrong there. I do the same, guess all of us who commented on this must be wrong and sick huh? Whoever wrote the title on that pic must be sick when they think a father and daughter kiss is awkward just because its on the lips. Lots of people kiss their loved ones like this.

  • November 17, 2009 - 1:32pm USistoiletpaper

I agree with all who are saying this is a trashy mag. Totally. I kiss my dad on the mouth. I don't get all up in his junk, but it's a father daughter thing. Seems like your story has no fans. Nobody is cheering you on for this garbage US. Back to 'People' --the REAL celebrity magazine that doesn't make s&*% up.

Alright Bradley Jacobs, as the senior editor why don't you stop...!!! A lot of parents and children kiss on the mouth. Why are you degrading this father/daughter duo? Check picture and comment) Aren't you selling enough mags without the sensationalism?

Your paper is turning to crap, and your writers should be sued for the lies and garbage you put out there.

#1 - The first awkward situation was at the funeral of his long time love. His head was not on right that day and he hadn't seen his daughter in a very long time. #2 - This is not a awkward kiss. Give this family a break and allow them to get it together because they need each other and a family unit.
