"Upon careful review, we have decided to discontinue airing our current television commercials featuring Steve Rannazzisi," the company said in a statement, via NBC News, on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Rannazzisi's campaign with the food chain tied into his character from the comedy The League. In the FX series, the 37-year-old actor plays a fantasy football league junkie named Kevin.

Earlier this week, Rannazzisi apologized for lying that he escaped death during the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. He has been telling the false story for over a decade.

"I don’t know why I said this. This was inexcusable. I am truly, truly sorry," he said in a statement Wednesday. "For many years, more than anything, I have wished that, with silence, I could somehow erase a story told by an immature young man. It only made me more ashamed. How could I tell my children to be honest when I hadn’t come clean about this?"

He continued: “It was profoundly disrespectful to those who perished and those who lost loved ones. The stupidity and guilt I have felt for many years has not abated. It was an early taste of having a public persona, and I made a terrible mistake. All I can ask is for forgiveness."

Rannazzisi claimed that he was working for Merrill Lynch on the 54th floor on the day of the terrorist attack, and the incident is what pushed him to move to L.A. Fellow comedian Pete Davidson, who lost his father on 9/11, publicly forgave Rannazzisi for his actions via Twitter — after an initial dig.

“It's ok @SteveRannazzisi people make mistakes…Can't wait to meet my dad for lunch later,” the Saturday Night Live star tweeted Wednesday, before adding: "Take it easy on @SteveRannazzisi…He reached out to me and is truly sorry."
