The Lemonade songstress, 34, surprised viewers by opening the awards show with Kendrick Lamar and performing “Freedom.” After the performance, she immediately departed for the airport, and asked her mother to stay and accept any awards on her behalf since she was nominated in five categories.

When “Formation” won for Video of the Year, Tina, 62, stepped up on stage to take the trophy. “On behalf of my beautiful daughter, who is on a plane — she had to run straight from the stage and get on the plane and fly to London for a concert. Hopefully she’ll make it in time,” she said. “But that’s how important this awards show was for her to show up.”

The dedicated Beyhive fans immediately noticed that London wasn’t her next tour stop. The following concert was actually in northeast England in Sunderland and it wasn’t until two nights later on Tuesday, June 28. Fans accused Tina of lying about why Beyoncé left the BET Awards early and where she was going.

Tina responded to the backlash in two lengthy Instagram posts, explaining that it was an honest mistake. “I just got a wind of the mess that has festered since last night! The fact that I supposedly lied about my Daughters concert. First of all I did make a mistake on the city and the day. I asked why did she have to leave early and was told by a member of her staff that ‘she had to get back in time for her concert ‘ and that she actually should have been there 2 days before, as the tour has been down for a month I assumed the date was Monday and the city was London well it turned out to be in the Uk but wrong city and on Tuesday. I want to point out that there is a nine hour time difference and it is an eleven to 12 hour Flight that equates to 19 – 20 hrs to get there!”

“I am hurt and disappointed because I know what kind of work, sacrifice, and personal Money it took for her to do this show and support the Bet Award show and to give her fans that did not get to attend the concert a piece of her show,” she continued. “We start lies and false rumors about our entertainers we celebrate when they stumble, we hope that they fall. We put them against each other when it’s room for them all! We talk negative about them and even their children which should be off limits. When they are gone we cry and say how much we loved them and cherish them we salute them in tributes. Well how about we do that when they are here.”

Besides Video of the Year, the “Hold Up” singer also won the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award for “Formation,” the Centric Award and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.
