Zooey Deschanel is setting the record straight!
A Los Angeles Times opinion piece published Sunday claimed that the singer-actress called downtown L.A. the "worst [part] of L.A." The op-ed's author, Patt Morrison, even went so far as to call the 500 Days of Summer star a "snobby cow."

Deschanel, 31, responded to Morrison's criticism in an open letter on HelloGiggles.com. "I never spoke to you at [the BAFTA dinner]; in fact, you weren't even there," she said. "I am completely and utterly shocked that a professional journalist, whom I have never met, would take a partial quote out of context and use it as the basis for a misguided personal attack."
According to Morrison's article, a friend of the writer's spoke with Deschanel before Prince William and Kate arrived at the gala. "I just don't want them to see the worst of L.A.," Deschanel said, according to Morrison.

So what did Deschanel mean by that comment? "I did make a reference to a parking lot adjacent to the [Belasco] Theatre that had a lot of trash in it in an attempt to be humorous," she explained. "I simply said, 'It's funny they brought royalty here. There is a parking lot with trash around the corner.' It wasn't an opinion. It was true… I thought that the juxtaposition of British Royalty and trash was amusing in a high-brow + low brow sort of way, but I never said that I, personally, didn't like downtown, the Royals, or even trash."
In Morrison's disparaging op-ed, she harshly asked Deschanel if she didn't "have any homeless people there near your Westside home? Or does that not count, because they're on the beach, not the sidewalks?"
"I do not live on the Westside," Deschanel fired back. She also added, for the record: "I LOVE DOWNTOWN L.A."
"It's hard for me to comprehend why you launched such a vile and toxic blow in my direction over a sentence fragment that you did not even hear for yourself," Deschanel said. "I do hope that in the future when writing about something, especially a human being, you will consider both the facts and context before publishing your opinion."

Tell Us What You Think
8I appreciate Zooey's ability to defend herself in a society where celebrities can be verbally attacked and just have to suck it up. She's still a person, who was just speaking her mind. (in a hilarious way that is true to her personality). And to Elicia, hon, Im sure you walk right out of the gym in your sweaty gym clothes but most people change into normal clothes when they leave. I don't know, maybe she's just a normal person... just saying.
Someone seems guilty and eating her own words. I met her and well she was snobby and probably a cow because she said she had just came from the gym and that's why she didn't want to take a pictures - she was wearing tights and not sweaty at all. Just a snob.
Even more fun - across the tarmac from where they landed??? A big hill where the airport burns things -- and a disgusting out-house...yep, oil rigs too...the Royals' first glimpse of LA...Zooey isn't a snob, she's quite a gal. I guess she learned the hard way that the word "journalist" doesn't have a bunch of credibility tied to it anymore.
Okay, lets assume for a second she did say it exactly how it sounded...She would be correct. It's funny that the fricking Prince and Princess of England would attend an event and the parking lot would be trashed! Not that they saw it but either way... Anyway, she is entitled to an opinion just like everyone else but I don't believe she meant it like that. Stupid "journalist" trying to play up his own name over misguided hear-say.
Good for her - love her. Such a great actress.
most Newspapers these days cover more tabloid news than hard news. it's not like it was in 1970 when Newman & Woodward tood out a half page ad denying they were getting a divorce. nor is Ms Deschanel an A list actress so who cares what she thinks
seems like the LA times are scraping the bottom of the barrel for writers these days. Gonna cancel my subscription. It's gotten really bad. Bush league journalism.
Even if she didnt like that part that would be fine. Shes entitled not to like certain parts of the area she lives!! Especially if bums and trash were all around I wouldnt like it either!
