"Floor and table lamps are an easy way to give your space ambient light," Lewis tells Us. "It's great to mix and match designs. [I] encourage homeowners not to buy a matching floor and table lamp set."
HOW TO: Add oomph to a neutral space
Such lighting -- which Lewis suggests keeping at a low wattage for soft light -- can serve as one of the home's most functional accessories.
"If you get tired of the look, switching out the shade or placement adds flexibility," our expert says.

But don't go too overboard when placing your lighting fixtures.
"Place lamps where they are functional. You don't want to over-accessorize a space," Lewis warns.
