Stop right there, and put down the hair elastic.

It's time to rev up the hair dryer and master the art of the blow out with these tips from MariLynne Mele, senior stylist at Blow, the New York blow-dry bar beloved by stars like Julianne Moore and Whitney Port.

First, get set up in a well-ventilated area. "Crack the window or leave the door open. That way it's easier for you to get through your blow dry without getting hot," Mele tells

Also use a boar bristle-blended brush. "It's tighter on your hair and it means less stress on your arms and on your wrists," Mele adds.

When applying products (like the Ready Set Blow, $21, and the Blow Up root lift concentrate, $21), start at the back of the head and move forward to avoid excess buildup near the hairline.

Once dry, tilt the head back so your hair hangs, and apply hairspray all over to set the look.
