L.A. Laker Sasha Vujacic made a slam dunk when he proposed to tennis champ Maria Sharapova last Tuesday.
A beaming Sharapova, 23, recently stepped out with her un-missable new engagement ring from her beau, 26.

"This ring makes a statement. It's no wonder why Maria is smiling in the photos! " jewelry expert Michael O'Connor tells UsMagazine.com.

After nearly a year of dating -- they first stepped out together at a November 2009 U2 concert -- Vujacic proposed to Sharapova in his Manhattan Beach, Calif. home. No wedding date has been announced.

Back in August, the Slovenia-born basketball star says he and Sharapova has "helped each other" become better at their respective sports. "We both understand what the other is doing and going through, and what it takes to do well in what we do," he said of Russia-born Sharapova.

please age ain't nothing but a number not all stars are showy about the size of their engagement rings or actual wedding rings for example I think Joanne Woodward's engagement ring when she married Paul Newman was only 2.5kts and set in 18kt yellow gold not platinum but they weren't the showy type of celebrities either and look how many decades the two of them were married. not that Maria & Sacha will be married even half that.

My husband proposed to me 7 years ago when he got off the plane from his 15 month tour in Iraq. It was a beautiful tin pop top lid off an old soda can because it's all he could find before he saw me. Guess what? We're celebrating our 7th anniversary soon and yes, we got a diamond wedding ring but the pop top is still in my jewelry box and always will be. The size of the diamond doesn't make the statement - the meaning behind the ring does. Guess he had to compete against Lamar's ring he got for Khloe and Kobe's rings he got Vanessa for his cheating apology. Can't have your Laker trophy wife sitting in the stands with a smaller diamond than the other one.

that's a pitance for a celebrity engagment ring less than 40k a Karat. nor is a big engagment ring a new thing in hollywood Whitney Houstons engagement ring when she married Bobby Brown coast over 1 million dollars and was a 17 Karat Ascher cut D Flawless diamond. or more recently Amy Adams's ring is 5.5 Karats in an antique platinum setting and cost 3 quarters of a million dollars. of course musicians and actors are different than athletes
