Debuting his dramatic new haircut on Wednesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Robert Pattinson explains that he buzzed it off the sides for hygienic reasons.

"It's three days old," the famously coiffed Pattinson says. "I got a terrible infestation of nits and I had to shave it all off."

"No you did not! Don't start that rumor," rebuffs Ellen DeGeneres.

The 24-year-old Twilight superstar comes clean: "No, I'm doing a film."

Pattinson starts shooting Water for Elephants (based on the book) opposite Reese Witherspoon in L.A. this Thursday.

"It's about a circus in the 1930s," Pattinson continued. In the flick, Pattinson will play a circus worker who falls in love with an older woman: the wife of an animal trainer (Witherspoon).

The naturally shy actor admits to DeGeneres that he "always had a problem actually thinking before I open my mouth...I have a problem with thinking."
