Taylor Swift talked with Teen Vogue about her most embarrassing past fashion and beauty missteps, plus the style rules she follows now

Should've said no to the cornrows, Tay. These days, Taylor Swift looks picture-perfect wherever she goes—even the gym! She wasn't always so style-savvy, though. As she recalled in a recent interview with Teen Vogue's Andrew Bevan, she's had her fair share of fashion and beauty missteps just like the rest of Us

"Passing trends tend to be the things that you look back on and you go, 'Whoa. I really did that, didn't I?' Everybody's got some embarrassing photo," the "Red" singer, 24, told Bevan.

In Swift's case, there are multiple embarrassing snapshots. "My high school pictures are, like…tragic," she admitted. "My style forever was going to be cornrows. I took my school picture with the cornrows." Joking, she added: "It really thrust me into what it's like to not have anywhere to sit in the cafeteria."

Now that she's older, she has a better sense of what works for her—and perhaps more importantly, what doesn't. Trousers and slacks, for instance, are a no-go, but some other types of pants are okay. The pop superstar also steers clear of "boyfriend jeans" and builds her outfits around her lipstick color.

"I'm, like, red lips or not? And then I'm always like, yes, red lips," she quipped of her signature color. As for the rest of her look? "I kind of am mixing '50s, '60s, a little bit of '80s, '90s," she told Bevan.

Her favorite ensemble to date, though, is the dress she wore to the 2014 Met Gala in New York City, which—is Swift's Twitter followers may remember—her cat Meredith "attacked" during a fitting.

"I got to wear this Oscar de la Renta gown to the Met Ball," she told Bevan. "It was ballet pink, it had a bow in the back, it had a long train. It was so classic and simple."
