David Letterman: It's "Chilly" Back at Home

Tuesday – October 06, 2009 – 9:23am

In addition to apologizing to his wife Regina Lasko, David Letterman also poked fun at the $2 million sexual extortion plot against him.

"I got in the car this morning and the navigation lady wasn't speaking to me," he deadpanned on his show Monday.

Talking about the cool fall weather, he said, "It's chilly outside my house; chilly inside my house."

He also joked about what he'll do next.

"This is only phase one of the scandal," he began. "Phase two: Next week I go on Oprah and sob."

His guests also had fun at Letterman's expense.

Steve Martin told the embattled late night host that the incident "proves that you're a human being. And we weren't really that sure before."

Letterman played along. When guest Martin Short sat on Martin's lap, he joked, "You spend one more minute on his lap, you're gonna get blackmailed."

Other late night hosts didn't make any Letterman jokes Monday night - except Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson.

He said he's been put in an awkward position because Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants, produces the Late Late Show.

"The person you work for, the person you admire and respect, is caught in an embarrassing situation," Ferguson told his audience. "And your job is to be funny about that, whilst trying to keep your own job."

He then joked, "So this is my last show."

Ferguson defended Letterman, calling him "the king of late-night television."

"If we are now holding late-night talk show hosts to the same moral accountability as we hold politicians or clergymen, I'm out," he said. "I'm gone."

Infidelity is a moral issue, not a criminal matter. The illegal attempts of extortion against Letterman are illegal. The sexual relations Dave had appear to have been outside of a marriage Under God. It is not our place to Monday Night Quarterback his situation. We don't know what he has said or done outside of the camera. I would imagine that he has apologized in a more meaningful manner with his wife, staff, and others. Unfortunately, the media in it's wicked way of selling stories got ahold of what was occurring with Letterman. He chose to "lightly" deal with what was occuring to him, his wife, relations, and staff with a Very Public apology. It was not required, nor necessary, but he did it. Yes there was a joke spin to what he was saying... but remember, people do not tune into Late Night with Letterman to hear a Serious Sad bit of information. At this point, this should be a private matter as time moves forward.

Everyone's human and certainly not above reproach. Too bad he didn't learn a few more things from his mentor Johnny Carson, even though he had his own problems as well. He was honest about it and came forward, but only after his hand had been forced he didn't have much of any other choice. Especially testifying before the grand jury. You reap what you sow, hopefully he'll be able to keep his marriage going and have a somewhat better perspective on things when doing his show. I doubt it though, he's a comedian first and foremost. Who knows but I'm sure if he hadn't been the person he was and the background history he possessed with being in show business, probably the one's he had liasons with would have never happened. They would have blown him off and said get lost! With money comes power and responsibility AND a sense of decency and respect for one's self and others. Too bad he didn't fall into the latter categories. It de-values everyone and makes marriage seem cheap and old fashioned, just like what most of Hollywood exemplifies.

Perspective: We have killed over 1 million Irai's for being Iraqi's; Obama has given the private Federal Reserve Bank over 23 TRILLION dollars; the government wants to force us to take deadly flue shots; and so much more to be concerned with then a two adults having sex...it's their "karma" and none of your business, grow up, END THE FED, stop being a war nation filled with fat, ignorant people.

Just another PREDATORIAL PARASITE the world has to contend with ... why do people like David Letterman ... he's not even that funny, his shows are annoying. He's giving his people a bad name ... oh, wait their deranged behaviour continues to establish that.

Stephanie Birkitt is only 34 y.o. Dave had been with his current wife for 10 years already when he started dating this young lady, so even though he dated her before he was married he was already in the relationship so it actually does matter. Not only does he say he had sex with her, but with others on her staff. I happened five years ago which is when his current wife was pregnant with his son or right when he son was born, as he 5 y.o. So he may have been without an "I do", but he was in a relationship with a child. Not very mature on his part, but then he's quite a selfish and arrogant fella. He needs to visit the dentist and spend some of all that money to have his teeth whitened. He might not look so old. Apparently, he likes them young and they like the possibility of his wealth.

Let's go to the Bible: He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone. Decipher that statement for what it's worth. Put yourself in his place and think about how you would feel. Then move on. - ANON

The majority of you people doing the posting, are either Palin fans, or people that didn't care for Dave before, and aren't expected to like him now. You have no right even posting on the subject, considering your feelings before. You might want to clean up your own back yards before judging Dave on this little matter. It happened a little over 5yrs. ago, and we're making a big deal out of it now?? Dave's not the criminal here, it's the other jerk you need to be going after. It made me sick to think he apologized to Palin. He owes that woman nothing. Maybe all the other comedians would like to apologize as well?

of course it's "chilly" inside of his house, he cheated on his wife... did he really think that she would be all warm and cuddley after she found out?!! i say if there is a way for them to work this out then good, if not get over it and move on there's a child involved that needs to be thought of.

If we do a hurtful act, the first step is to acknowledge that it was hurtful. Joking about it does not indicate genuine acknowledgement.

All you weepy women,,,, wa wa. In the famous words of the late George Carlin,"She was ASKIN for it." A few of the posts are complaining about his joking. Duh, he's a comedian, it's his job. All you ice queens complaining about his conduct. How many of you are from broken marriages ? It's so obvious. A late night comedian has an obligation to be FUNNY. Blackmail is against the law. If you don't like his show, change the channel. I like his show, I like Dave, I like him more now than before. He stood up to creep, and defended himself. I like Dave's jokes about himself, and others. I don't seek out Dave for moral advice, I seek out Dave when I want to laugh. All you complainers, go live your own life.

and by the way people keep on asking what's the big deal because he wasn't married at the time. but he had been in a serious relationship with his girlfriend (now wife) for over 10 years at that point. the guy is a sleaze.
  • October 06, 2009 - 11:27am Rania Says:

Does he want sympathy? Because he's not going to get any. He's a sleaze. And an old sleaze at that. Would you think a man of his age would have matured and stopped chasing women and settle down with the woman he has. And why is he cracking jokes? I'm sure his wife isn't laughing. I didn't care for Letterman too much before. But i really cant stand the old sleaze now.
