Jay Leno: I Plan to Talk to Conan When "Things Cool Down"

Wednesday – January 27, 2010 – 12:41pm

Jay Leno says he still hasn't talked to Conan O'Brien, who ended his seven-month run as The Tonight Show host Jan. 22 to allow Leno, 59, to return to late night.

"I haven't talked to him through all this," he tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview airing Thursday. "No, I haven't." Leno says he wanted to phone O'Brien, 46, "but it didn't seem appropriate ... I don't know. I think it -- let things cool down and maybe we'll talk, you know."

Leading up to O'Brien's finale, the two traded a series of barbs. ("You can do anything you want in life. Unless Jay Leno wants to do it too," O'Brien joked on his Jan. 13 show.)

Leno tells Winfrey he didn't take any of the jokes seriously.

"They were jokes. And that's okay," he says, adding, "It's what we do, you know? You can't -- it's like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you're a fighter. That's what you do."

Kidding aside, Leno calls the entire situation "a mess."

O'Brien's last night Jan. 22 drew a preliminary rating of 7.0, which translates to about 8 million households.

O'Brien reportedly inked a $45 million deal with NBC which prohibits him from starting another TV job until Sept. 1.

Leno's primetime bomb The Jay Leno Show will end Feb. 9 — two days earlier than expected. He will resume his late-night post starting March 1.

I understand where Conan is coming from. I understand where Jay is coming from. The people we should really be mad at are the geniuses who run NBC. They managed to take the one thing their network still did pretty well and ruin it. Someone should slip a lot of ex-lax in their morning coffee and put a stack of copy paper beside the toilets. Maybe an intern will mistake the result for a new script and we'll actually get some better programming on what used to be my favorite network.

You don't like his hair? His HAIR? Who cares?

So glad Jay is back. I've never liked Conan and his goofy sidekick. Conan's hair very annoying . .maybe cut the top would be nice. So not funny. Jay didn't do anything, NBC decide to bring Conan on, Jay didn't want to retire. They wouldn't let him out of his contract so he agree to the 10p.m. slot. The offered Conan the whole hour and he turned it down like a diva. Don't feel bad for him, he'll get over 40 mil to stop working! Plus he can still do another show in Sept. Most jobs you have a no-compete for much longer and definitely not for much money.

Leno knew exactly what he was going. Why he couldn't stinking retire when he said he was going to? He's a media w.h.o.r.e...he will be hanging out with Jon Gosslin soon enough. TEAM COCO!!

Leno is a complete schmuck! Of course he won't talk to him because he know's he's a backstabber. It's truly pathetic that he feels he needs to stay on the air, just for the sake of staying on the air. He already vowed in 2004 that he was retiring and would gladly hand over the reins of the Tonight Show to Conan. He's a disgrace.

Of course Leno wants to talk to Conan. Many comedians have stepped forward and said this is how the jerk operates. He scr*ws people over then wants to be their buddy afterwords. It's a shame Oprah gave Leno this free hour to spin his story. luckily "most" see right through him. Makes me lose some respect for Oprah that she would kiss his *ss on this, but anymore where she is concerned, I'm not surprised. I will NEVER watch the Tonight Show with Leno now and I hope his ratings stink and he's kicked of the network all together. At some point all his bad karma and back stabbing will come back on him. Nobody is buying the innocent "Hey guys, I didn't know anything" routine. It's as old and tired as all the bits he keeps stealing from other comedians for that joke of a show he's on. Leno is a LOOOOOSER.

they are all boring. there's better things to be doing at night when they're on tv, anyways, like: have sex or watch a good movie or read a good book or get those much-needed winks. none of 'em are worth all the fuss that's being made about this, that's for sure.
  • January 27, 2010 - 2:21pm Sue Says:

What a jerk Jay is!!!!! I wouldn't talk to Conan either, because he stabbed him in the back.
  • January 27, 2010 - 2:17pm Erin Says:

Jay has no class. I will be going to bed an hour earlier now because I will not watch jay. What he did was awful!!!!! He should be ashamed, but I am sure he is not.

For readers who are too young to recall - or who just weren't very interested, at the time - it may help you to read some background on the infamous 'Letterman vs Leno' feud. Here's a detailed article explaining how Jay Leno took over Johnny Carson's job as host of the 'The Tonight Show', way back in 1993. . http://doiop(dot)com/tonightshow (article from NY Times; 1994)

$45 million, isn't bad at all-H3LL, I'd leave 2. In my opinion I didn't think it was fair 2 dump Conan, just so Jay could fill his regular spot. Jay should have gotten another spot or his show should have went 2 another network. I understand that Jay is NBC's late night $$$ man (I meant funny man), but as long as everyone is happy, then so b it. Conan can now laugh all the way 2 the bank.
  • January 27, 2010 - 1:26pm George Ruth Says:

Of course Leno hasn't called Conan... He knows he was at fault, and he knows that he screwed Conan out of a life long dream, all for his own greed. Join the "No More Jay Leno!" Facebook Group! Show your disappointment in NBC and Leno for what they've done!

I like them both, but I wish Jay would have just ducked out and been the bigger man through all of this. When all was said and done Conan and his staff did a lot to accomadate NBC. Jay had his turn, it was time to move on. It will be hard for him, I think, to get his audience back. I want watch, I will be a Letterman watcher now.
