‘Counting On’ Recap: Jinger Duggar Causes Drama Before Boyfriend Jeremy Vuolo’s Marriage Proposal

It takes a village to raise a kid, or host a sports camp, or (maybe) get engaged. On the Tuesday, September 27, episode of Counting On, it seemed that all of the Duggars were working on large-scale projects. Jessa and Ben Seewald were toiling away in preparation for Ben’s sports camp for at-risk youth, while Jana and Joy were busy redecorating the guesthouse as a surprise for Jill and Derick Dillard upon their return from Central America. But both of those paled in comparison to the pressure Jeremy Vuolo was putting on himself to propose to Jinger in the most perfect way possible.

Ben Is the Worst Football Player Ever

As the date for his sports camp drew near, Ben got more and more stressed about whether the event would be a success. His biggest concern was that no one would show up (which would be a bummer considering he recruited nearly all of the Duggar boys to help out that day). After a slow start to the arrivals, however, Ben and his co-organizer, Steve Conley, got exactly the turnout they’d wanted.

Close to 70 kids showed up to hone their football skills and hear messages of ministry in between games. “He has such a compassionate heart,” Jinger explained of brother-in-law Ben. Jessa added, “It’s fun to see him in his element. He’s having a good time.”

Well, he may have been “in his element” playing football, but that didn’t mean he was very good. In fact, within minutes of joining the game, Ben managed to throw an interception. Oops. Still, the day was declared a success, and despite his rusty arm, Ben ended the day with a huge smile on his face.

Jana and Joy Start Nesting (for Jill)

Meanwhile, Jana and Joy got busy redecorating the family’s guesthouse in preparation for Jill, Derick and Israel’s return to the States. Apparently, Jana’s style falls more on the “classic” side, while Jill is more “earthy,” but Jana seemed determined to use her own tastes for the interior redo, even though Jill would be the one living there.

Jana reasoned that Jill would be thrilled with whatever they did — and she was probably right, considering that Jill has been living in a place without air-conditioning or other basic American amenities for quite some time. It seemed unlikely she would be picky about paint color when she no longer had to worry about wild animals wandering in the front door.

Jinger and Jeremy Are on Their Way

OK, so they did not, in fact, get engaged in this episode, but the wheels have been set in motion. Jinger was busy readying herself to visit Jeremy’s hometown with Jessa, Ben, Spurgeon and her mom, Michelle, in tow.

Meanwhile, Jeremy used a personal camera to record some thoughts, which included him teasing that he had “a little surprise” for Jinger the next time he saw her.

It seemed like that all-important meeting might never actually happen, however, since Jinger was having a hair emergency that risked causing everyone to miss the flight. “Every time I go to see Jeremy, I get very little sleep the night before,” Jinger admitted with a huge grin on her face. She then got busy trying to tame her locks with a curling iron — only to find out that the barrel she’d chosen was too small for the size of curls she’d wanted. As Ben tried to coax her out of the bathroom, explaining they might miss the flight, Jinger promised to be ready in “five minutes” (right) as she started over, again, with the styling tool.

Before the episode ended, we also learned that Jinger didn’t know the difference between spaghetti and linguine, or practically anything at all about football.
