Stef's smiling somewhere! A sequel to The Goonies is in the works, and it seems as though not just fans are ready for another pirate treasure adventure. Corey Feldman, who starred as the rambunctious troublemaker Mouth in the beloved 1985 classic, interrupted Sean Astin mid-interview via Skype to discuss the film on Wednesday, May 7.
"Sean, my question to you is what's happening with Goonies 2?" Feldman, 42, joked to his former costar on HuffPost Live. "This is what I know," Astin replied. "I'm doing my television show The Strain for FX in Toronto and I'm sitting down with the network brass and my phone is ringing in my pocket. It's you calling saying, 'Hey, I just met with the director and The Goonies 2 is happening so get ready to work,'" Astin recalled.
"They're actively trying to secure a writer based on an outline that they feel are really confident about," Astin continued. "This has been a 29-year-in-the-making sequel."
The Goonies director, Richard Donner, started a frenzy last month when he dropped a nostalgia bomb revealing that a sequel was in the works. On hearing the news, Astin, who played Mikey in the 1985 hit, teased about it via Twitter. "Huh? What? #Goonies 2," the 43-year-old wrote. "We Never Say Die!"
Feldman and Astin seemed extremely excited discussing the upcoming project during their mini-reunion Wednesday, with Astin noting that it will definitely "be a thing." In a new development, he also confirmed that Chris Columbus, who co-wrote the original Goonies with Steven Spielberg, will be making a return as well.
"Chris Columbus to the best of my knowledge and belief—the wonderful writer, director, producer—is partnered up with them in some way," he said.
The Goonies also starred Josh Brolin as Brand, Jeff Cohen as Chunk, Kerri Green as Andy, Martha Plimpton as Stef, and Jonathan Ke Quan as Data.
