Awards season 2013-2014 has officially begun! The nominations for the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards have been announced by Octavia Spencer and Paula Patton. This year, 12 Years a Slave starring breakout star Chiwetel Ejiofor and Brad Pitt takes the lead with seven nods. Steve McQueen’s directed film will go head-to-head with All Is Lost, Frances Ha, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska for Best Feature.
Other notables in the pack include Shailene Woodley’s nomination for Best Female Lead for her work in The Spectacular Now, Best Male Lead nominations for Michael B. Jordan in Fruitvale Station and Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, and a Best First Screenplay nod for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon.
Going down just one day before the Academy Awards, the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards will be held on Saturday, March 1 in Santa Monica, Calif. Comedian and actor Patton Oswalt will take center stage as host. See the full list of nominations below.
