Get your tissues ready. Kelly Clarkson released an emotional version of Hamilton’s “It’s Quiet Uptown” for the Broadway show’s brand-new mixtape.
Clarkson is one of the many artists who were asked to be featured on the album, which will be released in full on Friday, December 2. Her rendition of “It’s Quiet Uptown” — a devastating number performed by the characters Alexander Hamilton and Angelica Schuyler in act two of the show — is just as powerful as the original.
The American Idol alum effortlessly riffs through several key changes in the song. The track also sparkles thanks to pop-inspired production and instrumentals.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and starred in the Tony Award and Pulitzer-winning theatrical hit about the United States’ first treasury secretary, took to Twitter on November 4 to express his excitement over the project, which also features covers by musical superstars such as Sia, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Usher, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah, among others.
Clarkson’s Hamilton cover was one of the two tracks released with the pre-order of the LP. The other song is Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz and Nate Ruess’ hard-hitting version of “My Shot,” a song originally performed by Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens, Hercules Mulligan and Marquis de Lafayette.
Miranda shared his appreciation for fans’ positive responses to the Hamilton Mixtape via social media. “I'm just so happy you're happy,” he added on Twitter. “We've all lost so much sleep making this for you. I don't have words for this gratitude. #HamiltonMixtape.”
