‘Outlander’ Recap: Jamie Goes to War and a Fan Favorite Dies in Action!

Prepare to get your cry on! Jamie (Sam Heughan) led his men into the first battle of the Jacobite rebellion (a.k.a. the real-life Battle of Prestonpans) during the Saturday, June 11, episode of Starz's Outlander, and not everyone made it out alive. Find out which of your favorite Scots went to Highlander heaven as Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) attempt to change history and defeat the British.

Battle Royal

So, Jamie getting his fight on = all the swoons. But that obvious pronouncement aside, big news: The Jacobite uprising has officially begun! After quite the bro-off among his upper-ranking officials, Prince Charles (Andrew Gower) decides to lead his men into battle against the British, and — as Claire predicted — they totally slay.

The big moment goes down after Jamie's uncle Dougal (Graham McTavish) volunteers to ride into the bog that separates the Jacobites from the British to see if they can can attack sans sinking. The bad news? Dougal barely makes it out alive. The good news? Prince Charles is all "clap, clap, clap, Dougal for all the awards!" and gives him a huge hug. The better news? Some random farmer announces that he knows a secret path through the marsh, which means they can attack the Brits under the cover of nightfall. #BogProbs solved.

Jamie and his Highlander homies kick some butt (including wee Fergus [Romann Berrux], who makes his first kill!), and easily take down the British in an epic battle. But don't get too excited, because the fight didn't end without casualties.

RIP, Angus

Pour some out for our buddy Angus (Stephen Walters), because this fan favorite meets his maker during the Battle of Prestonpans. The fun-loving Scot is busy slaying both literally and figuratively, when his buddy Rupert (Grant O'Rourke) gets run through with a sword. Sure, Angus kills the hater who stabbed his friend, but then he gets hit with a cannon. Bummer.

Angus manages to carry Rupert back to Claire (who's tasked with tending the wounded), but doesn't tell her about his internal cannon-related injuries. As a result, poor Angus ends up dying on the infirmary floor, prompting a super-injured Rupert to heave himself out of bed and honor his friend's predeath wish — taking Angus' sword should he be KIA.

We'll miss Angus, but the silver lining is that Rupert makes friends with a random Highlander newb whose friend also dies in battle. Oh, and also Jamie gets stepped on by a horse, but fear not: He's fine, due to #EpicManliness.

Dougal Drama

Remember a few paragraphs ago when the prince was all "Dougal for all the awards"? Yeah, that's over. Jamie's unruly uncle has no love for the British, which is kind of a problem since Prince Charles wants to show them respect (after all, they are his future subjects).

Not only does Dougal kill random injured Brits just to prove a point, he wanders into the infirmary and completely flips out when he realizes that Claire's been tending to even more injured Brits. The prince witnesses his meltdown and kicks him out of the Jacobite Army — but fear not: Jamie steps in and convinces HRH to cut Dougal some slack. So apparently his job now consists of wandering around on a horse and reporting on British troop movements. Sounds good, but Dougal appears to think his nephew's trying to exile him, so that's awkward.

All in all, this episode marked a major win for the Jacobites — but don't forget that Claire knew they'd win Prestonpans based on historical fact. And since history is playing out as she predicted, it looks like Culloden is a guaranteed loss. Guess we'd better prepare for more of our faves to die.

Tell Us: Do you think the Jacobites have a chance of winning Culloden?

Outlander airs on Starz Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET.
