In the most meta casting announcement of the week, Peter Gallagher will be joining the cast of New Girl as the father of Schmidt (Max Greenfield), TV Line reports. Why meta, you ask? In 2007, Greenfield had a brief-yet-memorable role as a young Sandy Cohen (aka Gallagher) on The O.C.
“This is the greatest #NewGirl,” Greenfield, 35, tweeted when the news was announced.
Back in April, the American Horror Story star referenced his memorable O.C. guest appearance while joking about his desire to join the Fifty Shades of Grey cast. “The heat that I gave off playing young Sandy Cohen is the kind of heat I would bring to a 51st Shade of Grey,” he quipped.
The addition of Gallagher, 60, isn’t the only casting shake-up on New Girl in Season 5. The newly single Megan Fox is also joining the roomies in a recurring guest role.
New Girl Season 5 is set to premiere in January 2016 on Fox.
