Retired Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is first seen napping. The rest is needed: He soon agrees to help stop the assassination of a Middle East leader (Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kapoor, excellent) who wants peace with the U.S. In his corner? Trusty Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and a sharp new cohort, CTU agent Cole (Freddie Prinze, Jr.). Trying to guess the loyalties of everyone else -- from White House aides to NYPD cops -- makes for riveting drama. As for villains? Jack may have met his most chilling match yet -- a relief to fans who, like the weathered hero, could be wary of entering familiar territory. Rest assured: With tense political intrigue and nail-biting action, 24 makes time fly. (Fox, 9 P.M.)
