Jeff Bridges earned Oscar gold for his role as "Bad" Blake, a downward-spiraling country musician who tries to change his ways after falling in love with a single mom (Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal). The pair’s hokey May-December romance feels forced and hollow, and contrasts sharply with the film's gritty realism -- which includes a scene where a drunk Blake bolts during his own concert to vomit outside. At least the story is elevated by a stirring soundtrack. (20th Century Fox, $30)
