Us Rating: **1/2

Kate Winslet excels in this five-part miniseries as the titular character, an insecure Depression-era mom who is obsessed with pleasing her gifted -- and supremely entitled -- eldest daughter (played by Morgan Turner and, later, Evan Rachel Wood). Overlong and occasionally mawkish, this remake can't measure up to the 1945 classic. But it does deserve praise for its highbrow cast (including Melissa Leo and Guy Pearce), sumptuous period detail and the mother-daughter fireworks in the devastating final act. (HBO, 9 P.M.)
