OPENS FRIDAY 12/25
Daniel Day-Lewis sings, dances and furrows his brow as Guido, an Italian film director angsting through a midlife crisis. While Rob Marshall's first musical since Chicago has a starry cast, it isn't as linear or compelling as the 2003 smash. The broody Day-Lewis lacks the necessary pipes (paging Antonio Banderas) and displays no sizzle with his bland muse (Nicole Kidman).
Still, the film offers a few sublime moments: La Vie en Rose Oscar winner Marion Cotillard could be statue-bound again as Guido's wife, who sings (and she's good!) about loving a husband who strays. As his mistress, Penelope Cruz is kittenish and jealous -- sometimes simultaneously. And Fergie's prostitute brings down the house in a single song. Alas, a musical that could have been a 10 is only a 5.
