Us Rating: **1/2

This adaptation of the 2006 bestseller may not be the greatest show on Earth, but it does succeed as a mildly entertaining old-school melodrama. Robert Pattinson -- so refreshing to see him smile on screen! -- plays a Depression-era vet student who joins a traveling circus and has an affair with its married leading lady (Reese Witherspoon). It's a shame the gorgeous pair fail to generate much heat. If anything, Pattinson develops a more meaningful relationship with the circus' other star attraction, Rosie the elephant! (20th Century Fox, $30)
