Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern Tops Weekend Box Office

Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern made a lot of green for Warner Bros. in its opening weekend.

The superhero flick, which costars Blake Lively, Angela Bassett and Peter Sarsgaard, debuted with $53 million in ticket sales. Green Lantern, which cost an estimated $200 million to make, bumped last week's winner Super 8 to the No. 2 spot with $21 million. The sci-fi flick, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Elle Fanning, has earned $73 million since its June 10 opening.

Jim Carrey's family-friendly Mr. Popper's Penguins came in third place with $18 million. X-Men: First Class, starring Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and January Jones, fell to No. 4 with $11.5 million, bringing its three-week total to nearly $120 million. The Hangover Part II came in fifth place, bringing in $9.6 million.
