Was Ted Cruz’s Donald Trump Comeback Straight Out of Michael Douglas’ ‘The American President’?: Watch Amazing Video

Plagiarism?! Ted Cruz's emotive response to Donald Trump's attack on his wife, Heidi Cruz, might not have been quite as original as we thought!

Turns out the presidential hopeful's words, which at first seemed spontaneous and from the heart, in fact bear an uncanny likeness to some of Michael Douglas' lines from Aaron Sorkin's 1995 film, The American President.

As Us Weekly reported previously, the trouble between Cruz, 45, and Trump, 69, started last week when Trump accused Cruz’s team of being behind a smear campaign that used near-naked images of his wife, Melania Trump.

In retaliation, Trump vowed to “spill the beans” about Cruz’s wife, Heidi. (Liz Mair, the Republican strategist in charge of the anti-Trump PAC Make America Awesome later tweeted at the former Celebrity Apprentice host to claim responsibility for the ad.)

Instead of revealing any deep, dark secret via social media, however, the mogul merely retweeted an offensive split image of Heidi and Melania with the words “No need to ‘spill the beans’ — the images are worth a thousand words.”

Cruz responded by taking the high road, tweeting shortly thereafter: “Donald, real men don’t attack women. Your wife is lovely, and Heidi is the love of my life.”

But he later addressed the situation during a television interview, and his emotive response has now garnered more intense scrutiny.

"Last night Donald threatened my wife. He went directly after my wife. She is my best friend in the world," the politico blasted. "If Donald wants to get in a character fight, he's better off stickin' with me. Because Heidi is way out of his league," he added.

It's not until his quote is put side by side with a similarly emotive speech from Douglas' president (courtesy of Mashable) that Cruz's response looks a little less serious and a little more amusing.

"You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, 'cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league," Douglas says.
